I’m Digger.

I tend bar. Not my place, but as good as. The landlord is currently preoccupied. You’ve met him I believe? Or, maybe that hasn’t happened yet… We’re at the edge of a village in England, close enough to a city to know what’s going on. Far enough away that our secrets stay hidden. You might say, it’s liminal. Or not.

I’ve been called many things. Scavenger. Singer. Witness. Liar. Lover, by more than a few. Less printable names besides. What I’d say, if you pressed me, is that I’m someone who pays attention. To patterns. To the things that get discarded too quickly. To the flashes you may doubt happened. (They did) You’ll find those logged in The Midden. A Few Things I Value

  • A well-poured pint and a well-told story (you’ll get both here).
  • A dangerous detail shared in confidence (I never forget).
  • Good boots, and the sense to use them properly.
  • The way the magick tastes just after a bargain’s been struck.
  • The stubborn persistence of life in all its forms on this beautiful planet.
  • Readers who connect the dots.

I’ve lived through a good many eras. I still find this one interesting. That’s not nothing, believe me. I gave up on others.

And just so you know, I’m difficult to kill.

The books are written by a human author. I know her well–we talk often. She knows almost as much as me and doesn’t flinch when the story goes somewhere difficult. Her characters are all known to me, living and dead.

My advice? The world in these stories is not a simple one. You have to come at it from many angles. There is real beauty here and real darkness, and the line between them moves. You need to pay attention.
